Escaping Dunkirk After Being Shot | WW2: I Was There
Enticed by the prospect of cheap beer, good social life and a smart uniform Jeff Haward joined the Army reserve in 1937, aged 18. He hadn’t anticipated that tensions with Germany would escalate and by September 1939 he was called for active service and swiftly deployed to France. Jeff’s time in France was to prove eventful where he served with the 1/7th Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment. During close combat fighting, he was shot and wounded and became one of over 300,000 British soldiers evacuated from Dunkirk as German forces swept rapidly across Europe.
