Susan was 17-years-old, living in Ramsgate and working in her father’s pub when war was declared. She met her first boyfriend John who was in the Marine Corps and was calling up in 1940. Due to its location, Ramsgate had become an important army and naval base and when the pub was requisitioned by the army, Susan's family moved to Sheffield. She survived two air raid attacks and eventually heard news of her boyfriend John.
