Power Mac G4 QuickSilver (Part 2) – Wind5387
0:00 – Intro to Power Mac G4 QuickSilver (Part2)
0:43 – Peek at Mac OS X retail boxes/CDs
1:17 – Bootup into Mac OS X and tour
This is the second part of my Power Mac G4 QS video. It now runs the very first (official) version of Mac OS X.
After I filmed my first video of this Mac, I wanted to try to install the Mac OS X Public Beta. However, there were two major problems. First, I tried to install it from a USB drive, which, on PowerPC Macs, isn't possible. They usually work with FireWire. Second, this version of the Power Mac G4 can't even run the Public Beta because this computer came a year after it was introduced. Therefore, there was no operating system until I found time to order the original Mac OS X 10.0 retail box (which came with Mac OS X 10.0, 10.1, and Mac OS 9.) I installed it and it's been working fine since then (showing signs of its age, obviously).
This Power Mac G4 QuickSilver was an extremely fast computer (at the time), featuring an 867 MHz PowerPC G4e processor! One thing I did notice was after installing 10.0 on it, sometimes the computer said 1024 MB of RAM, other times it said 512 MB of RAM, so I was a bit confused. 512 popped up more than 1024, so I concluded that it had 512 MB. (That may be part of its age... who knows?)
I did find out that this Mac was used in some type of studio called Master Labs Studios, so it definitely underwent some rigorous processing, so this is surely a nice rest for a tired Mac. :)
Price when new: $2499 (867MHz G4e, 128MB RAM, 60 GB HDD, SuperDrive)
