Top Fashion Models Say They Feel Like Mannequins

This is a clip from my 1969 documentary for TV on the famous fashion designer, Pauline Trigere and her NY fashion show. I had never seen the world that she dominated and the models fascinated me. So I asked them questions and this clip presents some of their answers.

Pauline Trigère was a prominent French-American fashion designer known for her elegant and sophisticated women's clothing designs. Born in Paris in 1908, Trigère moved to New York City in 1937, where she eventually established her own fashion house.

Trigère was celebrated for her ability to create clothing that was both stylish and practical, appealing to women who valued both fashion and function in their wardrobes. Her designs often featured clean lines, high-quality fabrics, and a meticulous attention to detail. She was particularly renowned for her evening gowns, coats, and suits that combined a European flair with American practicality.

One of the hallmarks of Trigère's designs was her innovative use of fabrics and her skill in tailoring. She was one of the first designers to use wool for evening wear, and she was known for her creative use of textiles like silk, chiffon, and wool crepe. Her designs often featured bold colors and patterns, yet remained elegant and timeless.

Trigère became successful due to a combination of her design talent, business acumen, and personal charisma. She was a hands-on designer, often draping and cutting fabrics directly on the model, which contributed to the impeccable fit and unique style of her garments. Her ability to adapt to the changing tastes and needs of her clientele while maintaining a distinct design aesthetic helped establish her reputation in the fashion industry.

Moreover, Trigère was a trailblazer in the fashion world, not just for her designs but also for her approach to business. She was one of the first female designers to own and manage her fashion house, and she played a significant role in paving the way for other women in the industry. Her longevity and continued relevance in the fashion world, until her retirement in the late 1990s, are a testament to her talent and influence as a designer.
