Ustad Amjad Ali Khan in Duet with Smt Girija Devi ~ Confluence

It was in fact a long-standing desire by Ustad Amjad Ali Khan to record an album capturing the essence of thumri singing that led to this unique collaboration. Thumri is a prominent light classical song of a romantic and devotional nature that is the dominant influence on this recording. Khansaheb feels that the special link of music, poetry and their combined aesthetic enshrined in thumri has become obscured in recent years. Although he conceived the project in 1997 it did not see the light of day until 2004. Working in this close way—and for the first time—with Girija Devi, the greatest living exponent of thumri, was the obvious policy and has now given us this new creation from the heart of Indian musical tradition. To cement their intimate musical bond, Girija Devi tied a rakhee to Ustad Amjad Ali Khan’s wrist, in a recreation of the Indian tradition whereby a sister ties a sacred thread to her brother’s wrist.

We present a track from this Duet album CONFLUENCE, in Raga Zila Kafi titled "Kaisi Ye Dhoom Machayi". This album , "CONFLUENCE ~ Meeting of Minds and Melodies" (NRCD 0194) was published by Navras Records in May 2005.
