Republicans have ‘wheeled out the big guns’ on opening day of National Convention

On the opening day of the Republican National Convention US President Donald Trump addressed the issue of national unity, at a time when divisions and polarisation are perhaps the sharpest they’ve been for 50 years says Sky News host Chris Kenny.

The first day of the 2020 Republican National Convention has kicked off with President Trump playing a central role in the virtual event.

The Republicans wanted to go ahead with a full convention, but organisers were forced to a compromise with a few hundred party staffers allowed to gather for the event under strict COVID-19 restrictions.

Mr Kenny said already the strong theme of law and order at the convention is obvious.

He said the Republicans “wheeled out some big guns” as former footballer Herschel Walker gave the president a personal endorsement.

“Even a Democratic Party state representative gave Trump a tick on tolerance and inclusion,” Mr Kenny said.

Mr Kenny also spoke with Sky News US contributor Cameron Stewart about the convention and the big issues in US politics today.
