Andrews doesn't deserve an unfettered 12 months of 'martial law'

Victorian Liberal MP Richard Riordan says Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews does not deserve an unfettered 12 months of martial law simply because he wants it.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews announced on Monday his government will seek to extend the state of emergency powers for a further 12 months, past the initial September 13 end date.

The powers would allow the Victoria government to extend a state of emergency in four-week blocks for up to 12 months as well as greater powers to enforce mandatory quarantine, COVID safe plans for businesses and mandatory mask-wearing.

Mr Riordan said the opposition sees the state of emergency powers as a necessary tool all governments should have available, but the question is centred around how long the state of emergency should last.

"Parliament must be the supreme body in governing these things in Victoria," Mr Riordan told Sky News host Chris Kenny.

"Daniel Andrews has pretty much discarded parliament for the past six months."
