This little-noticed and vastly unregulated activity has large consequential costs — wreaking havoc on coastal ecosystems, wiping away entire islands, damaging the entire river system, and many more including the lives of humans at the site working. To make aware of serious concern Sumaira Abdulali, a bold and determined environmentalist addresses the measures to improve and abandon the respective problems. Sumaira Abdulali is a founder of the NGO Awaaz Foundation and Convenor of the Movement against Intimidation, Threat and Revenge against Activists (MITRA) and is currently a Governing Council Member. She has a goal to achieve zero sand mining, to accomplish she regularly addresses the issue on numerous global platforms and urges to have inclusive development for which she said, “The only mantra to this is using a master tool ‘social media’ for voicing out opinions on environmental issues”. The social work she does for the environment makes her "one of India's foremost environmental activists."
