Meet the Real Expert Brain of Urban Sprawling | Andesh Tomo | TEDxJakarta

As one of the largest metropolitans globally, Jakarta faces a myriad of complex urban problems: housing issues leading to mobility problems, resulting in severe traffic jams and some of the world's worst air quality. Citizens often attribute the chaotic lifestyle of Jakartans to the absence of urban planning. With uneven development and economic access, there's social segregation between kampongs (villages) and high-end complexes, a common sight in Jakarta. Unfotunately, efforts to beautify the city often involve evicting kampong residents. In this talk, Andesh challenges this judgment, questioning who has the right to determine the buildings citizens want while highlighting the communal support kampongs provide for Jakarta's urban workers. Andesh Tomo is a researcher, architect, and urbanist, that has dedicated over a decade of his life to unravel the intricacies of Jakarta's urban life. In 2020, he established Rame-Rame Jakarta (RRJ) as a hub for studying informality, shedding light on how informal elements shape the Indonesian capital. Through critical insights, Andesh advocates for more effective integration of informal phenomena in urban planning, policy, economics, and culture. Additionally, he is an architect and community advocate at Rujak Centre for Urban Studies, providing architectural support to displaced communities. His work reflects a commitment to understanding and addressing the challenges of informality in urban environments. Andesh's talk was recorded at Keong Emas Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, East Jakarta for TEDxJakarta—a 100% volunteer driven movement commited to ideas worth spreading, visit us at www.TEDxJakarta.org. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
