Feminist research and travel in conflict zones in the Middle East | Daniela Kranzlmüller | TEDxLinz
Many people in Western countries only ever hear about the “Middle East”, also described as the SWANA region (South-West Asia and North Africa), in a negative context – the women are thought of as helpless and voiceless, the men are demonized and villainized, while the societies they live in are referred to as backwards or underdeveloped.
When we set out to see these places with our own eyes and meet the people living there with our own hearts, we come to realize that things are not the way we thought them to be based on these dehumanizing stereotypes we adapted from certain media narratives.
“Why does the West still not see us as humans?”, one of Daniela Kranzlmueller’s friends asked her during her visit to Iraq in 2023. In this talk, Daniela shares similar stories and anecdotes from her travels and field research in countries such as Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Syria and Jordan. In doing so, she provides viewers with a new perspective and invites the audience to see that this region offers so much to explore, even more to (un-)learn and an abundance of beauty to experience – especially when it comes to its people. | Visit www.instagram.com/daniela.kramue At the time of giving this talk, Daniela Kranzlmueller holds an MSc in Organization studies and is pursuing a PhD in Management. Her research focuses on female entrepreneurship in conflict zones for which she conducted field work in Afghanistan and Iran. Throughout the years she has travelled countless times to the region, and now has an elaborate network of friends and loved ones in the area. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
