Do you know how to create a ‘forest’ in your ‘backyard’? Our speakers from Northern Majalengka, West Java, did not either until the place they called home began to lose some amidst the rapid infrastructure development in the area. They embarked on a unique journey, almost akin to fine art, with the assistance of local residents and the artist collective of Jatiwangi Art Factory, to establish an 8-hectare forest collaboratively funded by thousands of individuals, with each contributing a small plot of land to create a collective, sacred conservatory of the forest. They believe that collectively owned forests, whose functions are determined by the local community, can effectively resolve ecological, social, and cultural conflicts. This TEDx talk will ask us to rethink our tendency to overlook the bigger picture, often failing to see the forest for the trees in the climate crisis—one 4x4m² plot at a time. Ahmad Sujai and Elgea Balzarie are part of an art collective from Northern Majalengka, West Java, called the Jatiwangi Art Factory. They are currently focusing their work as the ‘marketers’ of a collective forest in Jatiwangi, called Perhutana (Perusahaan Hutan Tanaraya), to campaign the possibility of ‘fine arting’ the solution of reclaiming land for the people amidst climate crisis.
Perhutana offers stakeholders the opportunity to own a 4x4m² land plot contributing to the forest, and in return, they receive an exclusive certificate made from clay bricks. Once sold and planted, these plots will be officially registered as traditional forests with the Ministry of Forestry. This initiative encourages collective efforts in reforestation and environmental conservation, acknowledging the participants' vital role in the larger Perhutana family.
