San Antonio could see flying taxis by end of the decade as part of a federal air mobility program. The U.S. Department of Transportation and FAA named TxDOT among eight agencies to participate in the Advanced Air Mobility and Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing Integration Pilot Program, focused on eVTOL aircraft for urban use. Port San Antonio will serve as the innovation hub, hosting vertiport concepts and routes as the state tests and integrates these aircraft into the airspace. Partners include Archer Aviation, BETA Technologies, Joby Aviation, Wisk Aero. The project will unfold in phases over three years, with activity beginning within 90 days. Phase one tests routes and technology; phase two uses eVTOLs for emergency medical response, cargo and hub-to-hub logistics; phase three could bring passenger air taxi service. If on schedule, Texans could fly electric aircraft by 2029, linking San Antonio with Dallas and Austin, and eventually Houston.
