People recently have been asking, “How do you get a good snare drum sound?”

The short answer is taking the time to learn how to tune drums. Drums do NOT make a sound by themselves. Someone has to turn tension rods & hit the drums to get them to make any sound.

Instead of putting aside time to learn, people think an expensive drum will fix their “bad-sounding drum” problems.

It will NOT.

For this to work, you must be willing to put in the time by taking your drum heads off, re-tuning, and repeating.

Ten thousand hours is only around 417 days. If you took an hour per 24-hour cycle to learn how to tune your drums, it would only take roughly 40 years to get those hours in. Assuming you only do an hour a day 😉.

I say all of that to say there is no “self-help book for drum tuning.” Even if there was, you can only get so far with it. You need to be willing to work to achieve the sound you desire for yourself and the music!

Never stop asking questions, experimenting, setting aside time, or digging for more. Your older self will appreciate that you put in the work now and not when it’s potentially too late.
