Tiempo de sisones

April turns the plains of Peñalajo-Aprisco in southern Spain into a sea of green. Stretching on to the horizon, it appears featureless... but then an extraordinary pattern emerges from the tall grass: a black shape, crossed by two white stripes. A short harsh call fills the still morning air. It is the male Little bustard (Tetrax tetrax). He has earned the right to his own 'lek', a display arena... but he is not alone - there are other males in these fields, and they all want his place. So calling won't be enough... he will have to leap.

El mar de verde parece infinito y monótono, pero entre la hierba alta se mueve una forma con un patrón extraordinario -negro azabache atravesado por dos franjas de blanco puro. De repente, un chasquido áspero interrumpe los cantos de las cogujadas… Es el sisón (Tetrax tetrax) – un macho en celo. Y no está solo: en los grandes campos de Peñalajo-Aprisco tienen sus territorios varios machos de esta especie en regresión. Así que al sisón no le bastará con su llamada para intimidar a sus rivales: tendrá que saltar...
