The Great spotted cuckoo (Clamator glandarius)

The call of the Great spotted cuckoo is shrill for a reason.
It is late February, and the most majestic of cuckoos has arrived from its migration. It wants to be seen. It announces its presence, not only to its conspecfics, but also to the magpies, whose nests it will soon parasitise by distracting the parents to leave their brood unsupervised.
From their vantage point, the cuckoos look over the oak forest. Spring will arrive soon, and it will bring many challenges. But for now, the days are short, and when the Cinereous vulture seeks its roost, all small birds know they must find shelter... because at this time of day, the high-pitched voice of the cuckoo is about to give way to the deep, mysterious call of the Eagle-owl.

La voz del críalo no es estridente por casualidad. A finales de febrero, el hermoso cuco real acaba de llegar de su migración y quiere anunciar su presencia, tanto a sus congéneres como a las urracas, a las que pronto distraerá de sus nidos para colocar en ellos sus propios huevos. Desde sus atalayas, los críalos observan el encinar. En unos días llegará la primavera, y pasarán muchas cosas en la vida de estos fascinantes cucos. Pero todavía las tardes son cortas, y cuando el buitre negro llega a su dormidero, las pequeñas aves saben que deben buscar refugio... porque a esta hora, el reclamo cortante y agudo del críalo va a dar paso al profundo ulular del búho real.
