Spain's Armada Was Doomed Before Drake Fired a Single Shot

England didn't defeat the Spanish Armada — a corrupt Spanish bread contractor did, and Sir Francis Drake was basically fighting a fleet of starving men.

• In April 1587, Drake's Cadiz raid burned 1,600–1,700 tons of seasoned barrel staves — forcing Spain to store food in leaking green-wood barrels that rotted provisions before the fleet even sailed
• The Armada left Lisbon in May 1588 with 130+ ships and 30,000+ men — the largest naval force Europe had ever seen — yet scurvy and dysentery were already rampant by mid-June at La Coruña
• Spanish archives confirm food was loaded too early and 'went bad before the Armada sailed' — the supply failure preceded the first English cannon shot
