Watson & Crick Stole Rosalind Franklin's DNA Photo — Then Won the Nobel

Watson and Crick's Nobel-winning paper on the structure of DNA was based on an X-ray image they obtained without permission from a colleague — an image she had spent years producing and had not yet published.

• Photo 51 took up to 100 hours of X-ray exposure to produce and was shown to Watson on January 30, 1953 — without Rosalind Franklin's knowledge or consent
• Watson later wrote: 'the instant I saw the picture my mouth fell open and my pulse began to race'
• Within four weeks of seeing her image, Watson and Crick completed their DNA model — without ever conducting a single original X-ray experiment themselves
