GEORGIA BORJOMI to BAKURIANE Train KUKUSHKA - Skiing and Snowboarding
Enjoy GEORGIA BORJOMI to BARURIANE Train KUKUSHKA - Skiing and Snowboarding!
There is no better way to enjoy the rustic beauty of the Georgian mountainside than by the " Kukushka " (Georgian train or railway).
Especially at the cost of just 2 GEL (about 75 cents USD). The train runs across vast valleys, mountain cliffs, and marble blue rivers and is roughly 2.5 hours of pure magic.
The train itself is quite old. The railway began operation in 1902 once the railway had finished construction, however, it was only open for four years before the tracks and train cars began to deteriorate due to harsh weather conditions. It wasn't till the 60s that the track had been properly restored and weather resistant train cars were imported from Czech. The train you will ride in is powered by the electric Czech engine from the 60s. Not much is said about the train cars themselves but they look to be of the same build and era.
Many people come to enjoy the beautiful countryside of Borjomi and take the morning train to Bakuriani for skiing and snowboarding. Bakuriani boasts some of the best ski slopes in Georgia. It rivals the most visited resort - Gudauri in the north. There are several ski areas in Bakuriani, most notably Kokhta-Mitarbi and Didveli. Didveli is a bit more challenging, but Kokhta - Mitarbi has a bit more variety and is suitable for all levels. This is where we snowboarded and skied while we were in town.
Train Info:
The tramway leaves Borjomi at 10:55 am and arrives at about half-past one. It then goes back from Bakuriani to Borjomi at 14:15, after they switch the engine from the last wagon to the first.
