Australia's New Online Age Verification Trial

AGE VERIFICATION TRIAL
The federal government has announced a $6.5 million trial into age verification technology designed to protect kids online, but experts say it could be easier said than done. Yeah, without even looking for it, we can come across stuff we don't want to see online. So now, the government is trying to do something about it. It's spending $6.5 million to trial technology that can verify how old people are before they can access certain websites, games or social media. The details haven't exactly been worked out yet, but it could include things like asking people to enter their date of birth before visiting a website, using AI to estimate someone's age, or even scanning IDs like passports or drivers licenses. Although some experts say that could create other problems, because it means everyone, young or old, would be sharing more of their personal data online.

BLUE ORIGIN
Now to the latest in space tourism, where Jeff Bezos's space company, Blue Origin, has had its first successful crewed spaceflight since 2022. The NS-25 mission took six crew members to the edge of space, including 90-year-old Ed Dwight, who trained as America's first black astronaut in the 60's but was never actually selected to go to space back then. He's now become the oldest person to reach the edge of space.

PREMIER LEAGUE TITLE
It was a sea of blue here in Manchester, as Man City beat West Ham 3-1, to claim yet another English Premier League title. This is the team's fourth title in a row, which is something no other English football team has ever done before. And yeah, they're pretty stoked.

WOMEN'S STATE OF ORIGIN
Now to another broken record, the opening game of the 2024 Women's State Of Origin! The results are in for last week's match, and it broke both attendance and television rating records! About 25,500 people went to the clash, which is nearly double the turnout for last year's series opener! And more than a whopping 940,000 people watched the game on TV, Making it the most-watched Women's State Of Origin match on record!

HIGH HEEL RACE
And finally, there weren't exactly records broken here, but there might have been some err, bones broken. This wacky comp in China featured a men's and women's high-heel 100 metre dash, and a blind box high heel race...where competitors were given a completely random pair of shoes to run in. Looks fun. Fun-ish?

GARFIELD LOOKALIKES
First up, to a shopping centre in Malaysia where a Garfield lookalike competition is taking place. Yes, the famous cat who loves to eat lasagna and hates Mondays also has quite a few doppelgangers, it seems. With this year's first prize going to Hara, a mixed breed, former stray cat.

CRICKET SWARM
Now to Nevada in the US, where one family's house has been completely covered in crickets. Yes. Let's just say I wouldn't exactly be jumping for joy. According to local news reports, swarms of these insects have been causing havoc for folks in the area. And authorities are worried that if they stick around for too long, they might cause financial and environmental problems for farmers!

POWER NAP COMPETITION
And finally, it's time to hit the hay! Because this is South Korea's "Power Nap" competition. Ah. Competitive sleeping. Count. Me. In. Contestants have 1 and a half hours to fall asleep, with their heart rates being monitored in real-time to see who's sleeping the deepest. To make things harder, there were also distractions like feather tickling.
