Qantas Labelled "Spirit of Disappointment" at Choice's 2022 Shonky Awards

THE SHONKY AWARDS
Australia's most prestigious worst awards have just been awarded. The Shonky Awards are handed out to brands that experts say don't give Aussies a fair deal. They're by the consumer advocacy group Choice and they've been running the Shonkys for 17 years and this year the big brand in the top spot is Qantas. The reason Qantas copped a Shonky is because Choice says the airline is charging premium prices and not providing the service to match with flight delays and cancellations lost baggage and long customer service wait times. Choice even labelled Qantas "the spirit of disappointment". Qantas didn't really like that and released a statement saying that Choice's data was out of date and inaccurate. Other awardees include Zega Digital for expensive cookware that experts say doesn't properly cook, Bloomex for flower delivery that ends up looking like this, VetPay for promising affordable vet bills that aren't and Steggles... for vegetable chicken nuggets that didn't really have many veggies in them.

FLOODS
Several towns in New South Wales are seeing major floods peaks AGAIN. Hundreds of residents in the state's south and west have been ordered to evacuate as floodwater moves through the state's rivers.
All up there are 22 emergency warnings across the state. The town of Forbes is getting ready for what's expected to be its biggest flood in 70 years.

RUGBY WORLD CUP
The Jillaroos are off to a flying start at the Rugby league World Cup. They defeated the Cook Islands 74-0 and were in control from the get-go. Co-captain Sam Bremner scored four tries in her first test since 2018. The Aussies won the last Women's Rugby League World Cup back in 2017 and along with New Zealand are expected to dominate this time around, too. The Jillaroos take on France this Sunday.

DUGONGS
Seagrass meadows have been wiped out by storms and floodwaters. And it's been happening in places all along Australia's east coast. And sea grass is kind of important. It's also a dugongs' favourite food!
These cute mammals are part of the sea cow family like land cows, they spend most of their time eating grass but in the ocean. This has got researchers a little worried. Because if there's no food, that means dugongs are travelling further to look for it. And some are getting stranded and even dying. So for the first time in Queensland, researchers are counting them from the air.  But there are some positives. Scientists have been exploring new ways to grow seagrass. and they're hoping with the right weather conditions this area can bounce back.

TIGER SHARKS
We're sticking to seagrass now because scientists have got some help from Tiger Sharks to uncover what could be the world's biggest seagrass meadow! Researchers attached cameras to 7 sharks in the Bahamas hoping they'd lead them to something pretty interesting. And the sharks came across an even bigger seagrass meadow than researchers expected covering an estimated 66,000 square kilometres.

DOBBY'S GRAVE
Over in Wales visitors are being asked to stop leaving socks at the beach. If you're wondering why, well Freshwater west beach is pretty special to Harry Potter fans. Because that's where they filmed the scene where spoiler alert, house-elf Dobby dies. And ever since people have been leaving socks at his grave. But the Welsh national trust says it's not good for the environment and enough is enough.
