VR6 Auto vs Manual Block (they're different)

With all the bad info on VR6 engines about the auto vs manual block debate. Ive decided to make a video explaining them and what ive done to ''fix'' our auto block to make work on the 02M manual transmission.

The block was bored, parts were bought, and was most of the way put together before the different bolt pattern was noticed. The thing is, is one bolt not being used wouldn't be BAD, but the bolt not being used also has a locating pin in it and locates the engine to the trans when assembled to ensure everything is aligned. Ive read people just slapping these things together and running them without problems. In my opinion you NEED to have these aligned to make you're bearings last, don't know what would be the weak link or what would go first, but if things aren't centered and aligned it would put a huge unnecessary load on SOMETHING!!

We had a used manual block sitting there so measurements were able to be taken from pins that were in both blocks. That way you would have something to measure off of.

I cut a piece of steel stock in half to complete the ''boss'' that was needed to fit the pin in on the auto block. TIG welded with some EZ Weld Tig Wire, this stuff worked GREAT welding to the cast iron block. Made up a little X & Y adjustment out of 5mm bolts and a piece of angle to align our ''guide'' that we used to drill our 16mm reamer with. That helped out a LOT when measuring our new pin location, it allowed us to make super fine adjustments and get the pin exactly positioned in place. Which was critical because the bell housing would NOT have fit on the engine if the pin was out at ALL..

This would not have been possible without a lathe and custom fab experience. I recommend getting the right block from the start. I made this video to maybe help out others that may be looking or have already started their VR6 build. Also to expose these engines a little more.

In the end, when assembling the trans to the engine. They fit together like a glove!!! Everything worked out and was exactly on location. Now we need to get this in the car and see how fast it goes!! 🏁
