Dwarf Bittern Feeding at 13th Borehole in Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park - January 2022

During my recent visit to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park I was very surprised to find a Dwarf Bittern feeding at 13th Borehole in the Auob River Valley. This bird is not a normal inhabitant of this semi desert landscape. The recent good rain resulted in an abundance of standing water which allowed traditional waterbirds species to move into the area. Although I did not notice this myself, there were some reports of Dwarf Bittern feeding at Kij Kij Waterhole in the Nossob River Valley as well.

I found the Dwarf Bittern feeding at this waterhole on three consecutive days. It would appear as if it was mostly water insects that was hunted.
