Dwarf Bittern feeding 13th Borehole, Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is a semi-arid park and is known for unfortunate periods of drought with very little rainfall. The past 2 summer rainfall areas has been good rainfall seasons in certain regions of the park. The park really quickly turns green with water available all over the park after heavy rainfall. Obviously this results in higher insect numbers followed by birds of prey and waterbirds.

There were some reports of Dwarf Bittern sightings in the Nossob valley around Kij Kij waterhole after the first rains. During my visit towards the end of January 2022 the park received some further good rains. I was amazed to find this Dwarf Bittern on 3 consecutive days feeding in the overflow of the 13th Borehole in the Auob Valley. It was unfortunately very overcast, not ideal conditions for photography.

Herewith some of the footage of the action at the waterhole. I hope you enjoy.
