Vita Nostra | BUFFALO ‘66

Unequivocal. Once Buffalo ‘66 ends, you wish more films like it existed… But there’s only one Vincent Gallo and only one Christina Ricci unfortunately. I mean, I’d kill for a sequel but have no absolutely idea what it would be about. Buffalo ‘66 is non-negotiable. Astoundingly authentic. Realistic. I’ve never been in prison, my relationship with my parents is nothing like Billy’s, yet somehow I empathise on a really deep level with the guy. Raw portrayal by Vincent Gallo. Then Christina Ricci, my God, goes ahead and delivers one of my favourite performances ever. Smug, beautiful, playful — helps that I’ve known a girl like this, not that I’m implying any romance occurred there (not that you care) but I like being reminded of her… And how we “spanned time” briefly. The movie, for me, probably depends on Ricci’s presence. Not performance, mind you, because Gallo’s obviously delivering the chops too… But I think if it were any other actress, the film wouldn’t have worked. Which is saying quite a bit. She’s the best. Sincerity bleeds through every frame of Buffalo ‘66. As great artists do, Vincent Gallo points the finger at himself and his own life through this particular work; my 2nd favourite movie of all time.
