Pipe Major Bill Livingstone's Farewell to the 78th Fraser Highlanders
Although we did not know it at the time, this medley performance at the World Pipe Band Grade One Championship on Glasgow Green on 14 August 2010 will be the band's last at the Worlds under the leadership of Pipe Major Bill Livingstone. Bill Livingstone announced his retiral as pipe major shortly afterwards.
Pipe Major Livingstone has led the 78th Fraser Highlanders with distinction for the past 29 years. He has taken the band to the World Pipe Band Championships every year since 1983, and their appearances have always been keenly anticipated. In 1987 the band, which comes from Ontario, Canada, became the first non-Scottish band to win the Grade One World Championship. This year the band was placed tenth overall.
The band did not play the medley advertised in the programme, so I'm not completely sure about this. However, I think the tunes played may be:
Walking the plank, Miss Lilly, John Cairns' Double, Leaving Ayrshire and Old Wife of the Mill Dust.
Please let me know if I have got this wrong.
The close up of the bass drum was shot during a performance of the same set in the more informal setting of George Square on the Friday afternoon before the Championships.
