Rare footage of Roddy MacLeod leading Scottish Power's Medley at Tain 2005

2020 The Year of Silence: During this dreadful year of silence I hope to bring you some interesting and notable recordings which have not previously been published on this channel.

It was 2005 and I had just invested in pricey new Sony DV recorder not knowing that within months it would be made obsolete by High Definition Video. On Saturday 30 July I headed off with my new camera to nearby Tain where the RSPBA's British Pipe Band Championships were being held. I didn't really know how to get the best out of the camera in the dull weather but I recorded almost all of the Grade One competition. It was all hand held stuff (agony before long!) with no stabilisation or wind protection. The results were fairly dire, and the tapes have not lasted well.

However, with a bit of artificial intelligence applied to the picture (not yet that intelligent) and some tender loving care it is possible to to get something watchable - if you don't make the picture too big.

This turns out to be rare footage of Scottish Power Pipe Band playing a medley under Roddy MacLeod MBE who was Pipe Major from 1995 to 2006. I will add the tunes as soon as I can trace them. There's a lot to note in the performances at this time - the small size of the tenor sections, slightly lower pitch (I think), repertoire and style of tunes. The competition also included iconic bands which no longer exist.
