Jet Engines CANNOT Swallow Supersonic Air. The F-14's Inlet Had To SLOW It Down.
Here's a fundamental fact of jet propulsion that shaped the F-14's entire design: turbine engines cannot function with supersonic air entering their compressor blades. The shockwaves would tear the compressor apart and the engine would flame out. So when the Tomcat accelerates past Mach 1, the engine inlets must first slow the incoming air to subsonic speeds before it reaches the engine face. This deceleration must happen efficiently, with minimal energy loss, or the engine loses thrust exactly when the aircraft needs it most. The F-14's variable-geometry inlet was the solution to this problem, and it operated with a precision that was unprecedented in carrier-based aircraft.
