Skunk Works: A MAVERICK Team. Outside LA. Built F-104 Starfighter. At The TOP By 1950s.

Kelly Johnson had been with Lockheed since 1933, but his greatest creation wasn't an aircraft—it was the team he built. Just outside Los Angeles, Johnson assembled a small, maverick group of designers and engineers. They were nicknamed the Skunk Works—a reference to the mysterious "Skonk Works" in the Li'l Abner comic strip where something was always brewing. This team operated outside normal corporate bureaucracy, with direct access to Johnson and a culture that "assumed it could be done and then figured out how." By the late 1950s, the Skunk Works was at the absolute top of its game, having already produced the iconic F-104 Starfighter—a supersonic jet that looked like a rocket with wings.
