A-10 Was DESIGNED To Be Cheap. Why? WWIII Would Be Won By FACTORIES.

The Air Force explicitly told contractors: sacrifice cutting-edge performance for low cost and ease of mass production. In a full-scale war with the Soviet Union, attrition would be staggering—planes would be lost faster than high-tech replacements could be built. The winning side would be the one that could spam aircraft like World War II's Sherman and T-34 tanks. So the A-10 was filled with off-the-shelf parts: its turbofan engines were derived from commercial aviation, its avionics were deliberately simple, and its airframe could be patched up quickly. This "disposable but survivable" philosophy meant the Hog didn't need to be the best dogfighter—it needed to be everywhere, always, and cheap enough to lose in large numbers while still killing tanks.
