U-2: America's FIRST Spy Plane. 20,000 Metres. 1,500 Metres ABOVE Soviet Radar. 1955.

Before the SR-71, there was the U-2. In 1955, Kelly Johnson and the Skunk Works created America's first aircraft specifically designed for espionage. The U-2 was a single-engine jet that could fly at an astonishing 20,000 meters—roughly 65,600 feet. US intelligence assessments indicated this was approximately 1,500 meters above the reach of Soviet radar, meaning the U-2 could theoretically overfly the USSR undetected. The strategy was elegant: fly so high that radar couldn't track you, and anti-aircraft missiles couldn't reach you. The U-2 proved this concept worked—for a time. But Soviet radar technology was advancing rapidly, and Johnson knew that altitude alone would not be enough for the next generation of spy planes. #U2 #SpyPlane #KellyJohnson #20000Metres #ColdWar #Shorts
