Fairlie is a service town of over 700 (2013) within the Mackenzie District, once notable for having a branch line and a train, 'The Fairlie Flyer'. Trucks are the default haulage method for the District, with line haul travelling regularly from Tekapo, Geraldine and Timaru.
The town swells in size at New Year's Day for their parade and on Easter Monday for their A&P show. Several ski-fields and recreational lakes are in close driving distance.
