The Last Undie 500 run 2009 - Timaru, New Zealand

The Undie 500 was a Christchurch to Dunedin 'fun run' road trip event, overseen by Canterbury University's Engineering Society group (ENSOC), held annually from the 1980s until the late 2000s.

Excuse the shaky camera at times - this was years before the iPhone that the Heavy Truck videos are filmed with.

This was the final official Undie 500 run, held Friday 11 September 2009.

The approach was to take an old car (preferably costing $500 or below with registration and warrant), decorate it and travel with friends - piloted by a sober driver - on a Friday evening road trip between Christchurch and Dunedin.

This video shows the cars climbing the King Street hill in Timaru when leaving town after the midway 'pub crawl and fast food'.

As you can see, there are a variety of themes, many politically incorrect.
Most vehicles made it to Dunedin - some made it back.

While the Undie 500 over the years was a great time for most, the annual event stopped due to riots occurring in Dunedin on the weekends the event took place in the final years it was held.

Examples of vehicles, mostly 1980s and 1990s vintage within include a Ford Transit, Mitsubishi Lancer, Ford Falcon, Toyota Estima, Toyota Tarago, Mazda 626, Mazda 323, Nissan Sentra, Honda City, Honda Accord, Toyota Hiace, Nissan Homy, Ford Econovan, Holden Commodore, Mazda Bongo, Honda Civic, Holden Barina, Lada Riva, Toyota Corolla, Mitsubishi Delica and Mitsubishi Sigma.

You may also notice a few late model Holden Commodore and Ford Transit vans - keeping a close eye on things.
