24" Pipe Wrench Restoration ( Stilsons , Tool Restoration )

I needed a pipe wrench for a job i was working on and i thought why buy new when i can give an old set a new lease of life so here goes.

This pair is made by Record Leader and are 24" in size as you can clearly see it has seen better days but its not beyond saving so the first thing i done was to remove the upper jaw by turning the adjuster till it disengaged from the threads leaving the jaw to slide out. Next up i clamped the body secure so that i could knock out the securing pin for the lower jaw.

Once apart the parts were given a good clean in the parts washer then dried and blasted down to rust free bare metal in the sand blaster.

I then tackled the job of cleaning up all the rough casting lines left over from the mass production process, This really smoothed out the tool and give it a more high end look and feel. I then proceeded to weld up a void in the casting that was annoying me. Once welded and ground back the casting finish was lost so to fix this i stippled the surface with various objects then blasted the area at very high pressure to blend the repair and it worked extremely well.

Then i got the belt sander involved to smooth out the side of the jaws so that i could give it a nice mirror shine with a hint of the brushed look. I then masked up the surface to protect it while i was polishing the rest of the body with a wire wheel.

Once polishing was complete i masked up the rest of the body and gave the inlay a coat of etch primer in preparation for the top coat. While waiting on the primer drying i heat treated the jaws to harden them, The goal was to get as close to 700°c as possible for a good hardening i only managed to reach around 550 though but its better than nothing. Once quenched in oil the parts were then reheated and left to cool very slowly so as to temper the metal and remove the brittleness the comes from the hardening process.

I then cleaned the parts in the sketchy bench grinder and masked up the upper jaw ready for paint and primer like the body. The top coat was a 2k top coat called Indian blue and is very close to the original Record colour.

While the paint was drying i proceeded to polish the rest of the parts to a mirror shine with a buffing wheel and emery compound.

Once dried i painted the lettering with red paint for a nice contrast and i think you'll agree it works well with the blue and silver. Then it was a case of making a new pin to hold the jaw in place and as i dont have a lathe yet the pillar drill and a file will have to do, Improvise adapt overcome as they say haha.

Then it was simply a case of re-assembly and putting the tool back to work.

I hope you enjoy it and ill see you all in the next video.
