Worn Out Pillar Drill Restoration - JUMBO Episode

Well here it is as ALOT of you have requested the long awaited restoration of my worn out pillar drill or drill press if you prefer. You might want to grab a drink and a snack as this one is a big one filled with all manner of techniques, tips and tricks.

As you all know i usually spend a lot of time writing a big description of what I've done in the video but as this episode is so long i simply would have enough space here so what ill do is give a brief description and let the video do the talking for itself.

So basically, my drill has seen better days, the bearings are worn, it looks tatty and the return spring setup is missing so that was my first job, first fabricating the housing to hold the spring and then cutting the slots and fitting a retaining tab to stop the spring from freely spinning inside and once that was made i started stripping the drill down to component form.

Once in component from all the paint was removed using paint stripper, i could have used the sand blaster but with the amount of parts and how hard the paint was it would have been far to time consuming and would wear my blast media out fairly quickly so i opted for the paint stripper and wire brush method and as you can see it worked a treat.

I then masked up al the parts and gave them a coat of etch and then high build primer to proved me a good thickness to flat back to hide the rough casting texture of the parts, once that was done i painted the parts with a bright red 2k paint to match my Snap-On boxes .

While the paint was curing i set my sights on the rusty hardware, I washed all the oil and grease off first and then sand blasted them back to bare steel in preparation for bluing, I used the hot method for this in which i heat the parts to 300- 400 degrees and then dunk them oil this burns the oil onto the surface and leave a lovely black oxide finish that is highly durable.

Then it was simply a case of installing all the new bearings to sort out the sloppy quill and re-assemble all the parts and of course finish of the build with a nice custom data plate sporting the RRC logo :).

so anyway Enjoy and please leave a like and comment if you enjoyed this video :)

See you all again soon
