Vintage Blow Torch Full Restoration

Welcome to this weeks restoration video.It is another long and in depth one for all you vintage brass fans out there. If you fancy giving this type of project a go yourself you can find links to most of the equipment used below.

The item in question is a Sievert 504 paraffin blow torch that belongs to a friend of mine and it was his fathers and grandfathers before that so its an item with a lot of sentimental value and i hope i can do it justice and get it fully functioning for him again.

First up as usual is the initial inspection in which i discovered the front bracket that holds the nozzle cover in place was missing so i would have to fabricate a new one. Also as i suspected the leather washer in the plunger/primer was worn out so a new one would have to be made or the blowtorch will not work But apart from these issues the lamp seems in ok condition.

So the torch was stripped down to component form and given a good wash in a warm degreasing solution then dried off in preparation for the next stage wich was to place the steel handle of the paraffin tank in a rust eating solution of DEOX C while this was doing its job i made a start with the file set and cleaned up all of the damage on the hex nuts from years of wrenching/spannering and cleaned up all of the knurling, this was extremely satisfying to do!

Then i moved over to the sketchy bench grinder to clean off all the verdigris and oxidation that has accumulated over the years. when this was done the rust eater had finished its job and i could give the paraffin tank a wire brushing and polishing before moving onto making the missing bracket for the nose cone part. This was simple enough as i had a good image to work from, the hard part was scaling the measurements from the image to suit the real life blowtorch but im happy with how it looks.

Once the bracket was made i had to decide on a treatment to prevent the steel from rusting. I chose to blue the steel as it need to be heat resistant and heat resistant paint isn't rated to anywhere near the temperatures this bracket could see.

After that the tank was polished and masked up ready for its date with the filler and paint,if you have seen my other videos you'll know this process off by heart.

while the paint cured i polished all the remaining parts, made a new leather washer and cleaned out the fuel nozzle.

Then the full thing was put back together and tested.
