Ducati 600 Supersport Full Restoration EP3

Welcome to the long awaited episode 3 of the Ducati restoration. In this episode i tackle the job of getting the engine back into tip top shape and end up with a very pleasant surprise along the way.

The first thing to do is take the belt casings off and set the timing so that i know any steps i take from this point forward are safe and i dont run any risk of the valves contacting the pistons accidentally. After this was done i took off the oil lines for the carb de-icing system and took the nuts off the intake tubes and lifted the carbs clear of the heads.

After that i let the tension on the timing belts go and removed them as well as the pulleys, woodruff keys and belt backing plates, Then i was free to crack the head nuts and remove the heads and barrels with a bit of persuasion from the rubber tap-o-meter of course ;) It was at this point i started to notice that the internals were looking a bit too " fresh " to be consistent with the age and mileage on the frame but i put it to the back of my mind and proceeded with the tear down.

I now turned my attention to the side casings and prepared myself to delve into a pool of oil and horrors but as it turns out i couldn't have been more wrong! After the casings were pulled it became obvious that this isn't a high mileage or old engine build, everything was either spotless or brand new! So after admiring for a while i gave my buddy a call to come and over and have a look and give me a second opinion, You may have seen my post at an earlier stage about this but as i say in the video we measured and checked everything we could and the decision was made not to pull apart a perfectly healthy motor ( I have a post up on my Patreon with some of the more detailed measurements and findings we made if that kind of thing interests you ) So i set about sealing everything back up in preparation for the walnut shell blasting.

Once blasted and cleaned you could finally see that the casings were in really good condition just extremely scabby from sitting all those years but i'll soon have that remedied! With a nice masking job and a few coats of primer, paint and clear.

While the paint cured i set about cleaning up all the various fasteners and fixings and getting them ready for plating and passivating, Most of the items received a yellow passivate finish just like the factory fresh bolts would have been although i did make mine more slightly gold than yellow for more of a contrast with the silver engine casings and i think it looks really nice especially with the new deep grey bearing caps and valve covers opposed to the gold/beige originals which i never liked, yes i know a few people will have a bit of a fit because its not truly OEM but its my bike and i like the contrast so tuff! ;) haha

At this point it's time to start building the engine back up and its pretty much a case of reversing my tear down steps but obviously replacing, seals, o rings, gaskets and torquing everything up to spec as i go. I dont show myself replacing all the seals and o-rings but if you've been a long time viewer of the channel you will know im not a novice at this kind of stuff and if it needs replaced it will be.

I would have loved to show the engine turning over and blowing bubbles with compression but as i dont have the belts or tensioners this isnt possible so you'll just have to be content with the pretty before and after pics for the moment im afraid :(
As usual i really hope you enjoy this series of videos and leave a like and a comment to let me know what you think.

Enjoy.
