Things to know before moving to Amsterdam

In this video, I want to share 5 things that you should know before moving to Amsterdam. These things are hard to research before arriving, so I hope you’ll find them useful. I’ll be providing advice on each of the following points:

1.Supermarket
When you first arrive, pretty much everywhere you go (eg bank, townhall), there’ll be someone who speaks English. However there is one place where you’ll struggle a little bit, and that’s the supermarket.

2.Medication
In order to get certain medication, you’ll need a prescription from a doctor. To get this, you have to be registered with a doctor first, and this can take a while especially if you haven’t found somewhere permanent to live yet. Best to also check that any medication you bring to Amsterdam is also allowed.

3.Payment
Cash is not king here, and most things are paid for by card. On top of this, not all foreign credit/bank cards are readily accepted either.

4.OV chipcard
This is a smart card which allows you to easily travel on all forms of public transport. There are 2 types; personal and anonymous.

5.BSN number
In order to get settled in Amsterdam, it’s near on impossible to do anything without your BSN number and a Dutch bank account.
