Amsterdam first impressions
In this video, I talk about my first impressions of Amsterdam. It’s been about 1 month since moving here and embarking on this adventure. I go into more detail about each of the following points:
1) Landscape
Amsterdam is just so beautiful! It’s not just about the canals (although they are stunning) – it’s about so much more such as the neighbourhoods, architecture and greenery. Pretty much everywhere you walk, you will see these pockets of understated beauty. It just takes my breath away!
2) Bikes
For sure there are lots of bikes here! What fascinates me more is everything that has evolved from the bike e.g. red bike lanes, underground bike parking, modified bikes that can carry small children/shopping/dogs.
3) Efficiency
There are many systems/processes in place here that make life so much easier e.g. BSN registration, the postal system, making an appointment at the townhall, IDEAL payment system.
4) Public transport
There are multiple forms of transport in Amsterdam which makes connectivity extremely strong.
5) Language
Most people can speak English in Amsterdam, and for that I will always be grateful. That’s not to say that I won’t be learning any Dutch. It’s just that when you relocate to a new country, it is both stressful and frightening. Language can potentially be a barrier to settling in quickly and properly. Thankfully this hasn’t been the case here.
On a side note, I’d also like to say that relocating to Amsterdam has been very different to visiting as a tourist. I have been to Amsterdam a few times before visiting a very good friend. I now see it in a completely different light, and these are my first impressions as a resident!
