While it is illegal to import metal pronged collars into the country, the product isn’t strictly prohibited in most Aussie states, so they are still sold by certain dealers.

The device is supposed to control a dog’s behaviour by pinching its neck with the blunted points, and while the collars are technically still permitted in New South Wales, Western Australia, South Australia, the ACT, and the Northern Territory, Animal Justice Party MP Emma Hurst said that the collar’s use could still breach a state’s cruelty laws.

Hurst told Yahoo News, “Experts in this space now recognise that they are extremely cruel.”

“Causing [dogs] to develop pain and fear towards the people that are there to care for them is entirely unnecessary.”
