Can't Move, Won't Move: The Lost Lessons of Harbor Island - Alameda

On Tuesday, Oct. 9, Rasheed Shabazz shared this presentation at the Alameda Free Library, "Can't Move, Won't Move: The Lost Lessons of Harbor Island."

In 2004, nearly 400 families were forced to move from the 615-unit Harbor Island Apartments. Over a period of eight years, the Florida-based property owner, The Fifteen Group, allowed the West End property to deteriorate. The "mass evictions" led to a decrease in the neighborhood's diversity and the closure of at least one neighborhood school.

The presentation focused on the factors that led to hundreds of families being forced from their neighborhood, and Alameda, how residents and policy makers responded, and how many lessons learned from this moment in Alameda's recent history appear to have been forgotten.
