Cal Shadow Day 2011 with UC Berkeley Black Community

During my first semester transferring to UC Berkeley, I participated in the YWCA's annual "Cal Shadow Day" 2011. While waiting to be assigned my "shadows" for the day, I saw two young Black men from Oakland high schools waiting for mentors. Since I my morning class was approaching, I reached out to the two brothas and signed up to show them around campus.
Meet Castlemont High, c/o 2012 Dante Dunn and Jamelle Corbino. Two smart young men and talented football and basketball players, respectively. Both were more interested in attending Black colleges than UC Berkeley.
After visiting two of my class lectures, I showed them a few resources on campus. We visited the African American Student Development (AASD) office first. We met with then Cal BSU Chair Salih Muhammad, then ASUC Senator Stefan Montouth--who was also running for student body president--and Lajuanda Asemota. Not included in this video was an interview with then Onyx Express editor-in-chief Amanda Scurlock.
Looking back on this video, we could've done a better job of staying connected with these young men and others from local high schools to create a direct or high school-community college-university pipeline. Nonetheless, these two young men and many others--like the people in the video--are still doing great deeds and pursuing their dreams.
