Mukilteo Eagle Nest Resurrection

We are fortunate to live in beautiful Mukilteo Washington with an enchanting view of the Olympic Mountains and Possession Sound, an arm of Puget Sound. One of our most treasured views for many years was a windstorm shaped and sculpted tree that was home for a mated pair of Bald Eagles. Mr. and Mrs. Eagle had proudly raised many generations of baby eagles as we and our neighbors watched them hatch and grow until, with heart thudding fear and joy, they took their first soaring leaps from the tree and into the wind's embrace.

In November 2015 an overnight windstorm of unusual ferocity snarled and clawed its way off of the Pacific Ocean and for many hours howled through Mukilteo as Puget Sound hunkered down and, many without electric power, waited for the dawn. Morning brought restored electricity and stunned realization that our world had changed. The eagles were forlornly circling over a gap in the tree line where their tree no longer stood. Their home was gone and we could do nothing but commiserate with them, at the same time thankful for our own tiny damages compared to their loss.

For the past year the Bald Eagle pair has scouted for a new home, trying out tree after tree, most obscured from our view. Then, to our amazement and delight, they chose a tree near the same location of the old tree and in clear view from our home, and began the long process of nest building.

The new tree is about 500 yards from our home and this video was shot using a technique called "digiscoping" using my LG G4 smartphone camera looking through a Bausch and Lomb Elite spotting scope. Along with our human neighbors, we are delighted to have our eagle neighbors back and preparing a home for future generations of eagles and people alike.

During our often turbulent times of political unrest and conflict it is encouraging that even the most terrible of storms cannot defeat love and belief in the future. Just ask our friends, the noble Bald Eagles, as they once more resurrect their lives from despair.
