Bald Eagle Steals Fish from Otter

While photographing an immature Bald Eagle in northwest Washington state from the bluffs along the Straits of Juan de Fuca near Port Townsend, I saw motion below me and realized that it was a mature Bald Eagle in full attack glide. I swung my camera around and began taking pictures as the eagle silently slid above the water toward some rocks exposed by the low tide. I expected the eagle to grab a fish from the water but was amazed as it appeared to unsuccessfully attack a River Otter on a rock and then fly away. Looking through the camera viewfinder, I did not see what really happened and it was only upon reviewing the photos that I realized what a precise, surgical air strike the eagle had made as it snagged the fish literally from the otter's mouth and flew away with its prize. The group of nine otters dove for safety and emerged to watch the eagle fly away. A very surprised River Otter was lucky to lose only its breakfast. Once again, an eagle has demonstrated just how clever and capable they are. Magnificent!
