Max Steiner 'Now Voyager' Final Scene - Stokowski conducts

One of several US orchestras that Leopold Stokowski formed was the Hollywood Bowl Symphony in 1945. The players were drawn from the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the big film studios orchestras and open audition. Stokowski conducted the HBSO for two seasons before returning to New York to take up a post as a Principal Guest Conductor with the New York Philharmonic.

For a Hollywood Bowl concert in 1945, Stokowski conducted a programme entitled "Academy Night" that featured music from recently released movies. All the numbers were introduced by the Maestro himself and here is one of them. It is the final scene from Max Steiner's score for "Now Voyager," starring Bette Davis and Paul Henreid, which closed with the immortal line, "Don't let's ask for the moon, we have the stars." (The recording comes from the 1945 broadcast acetate, so is "historic" and not "high fidelity"!)
