The Rasch Trial: The State Says Murder, the Defense Says Accident | Pt 2

Two lawyers stood up over the same burned body and told this jury two completely opposite stories about how Crystal Rasch died. Only one of them can be true.

This is the Missing Wife Burn Pit Trial, the State of Wisconsin against Zachariah Rasch in Dodge County. Crystal Rasch, 37, was his estranged wife, in the middle of a divorce and days from moving into her own apartment when she vanished in June of 2024. Her remains were found burned down to bone on property tied to Rasch, who is charged with first-degree intentional homicide and hiding a corpse and is presumed innocent of both. Opening statements are where each side tells the jury the story it intends to prove, and today the two stories could not have been further apart.

Prosecutor Shawn Woller's version is simple and damning: an estranged husband killed the wife who was leaving him, then tried to erase her. Then defense attorney Zaki Zehawi stood up and did something you rarely see. He did not deny the fire, the acid, or the lies. He conceded almost all of it, and told the jury Crystal shot herself by accident and his client panicked. Watch how that one move reshapes the entire trial.

That is the fight you are about to watch for two weeks, and it is narrower than it looks. Almost everything ugly in this case is no longer in dispute. What is in dispute is the one thing the state admits it cannot answer directly: how Crystal actually died, and whether the man beside her meant to kill her. A pile of suspicious facts is not the same thing as proof of an intentional killing, and that gap is exactly where this case gets won or lost.

WATCH WITH JUSTICE

0:38 to 1:51 - Woller opens with the last images of Crystal alive, at Culver's and in the Goodwill parking lot, and a line built to land. "Crystal was a dead woman walking. The man beside her is the man who killed her."
1:52 to 4:46 - The state's frame: Crystal was not fading out of her life, she was building one. A divorce, her own apartment, her kids. Then, on June 10, every line of contact went quiet at once.
4:47 to 10:29 - The chain. The missing-persons report, the deputy who finds Rasch walking up from a burn pit, and the debit card buying drain cleaner and sulfuric acid while Crystal is nowhere in a single frame of surveillance.
10:48 to 14:31 - The physical evidence the state previews: a tooth and a skull fragment in the burn area, and Crystal's blood soaked into the Mitsubishi found hidden on the family's Adams County land.
14:32 to 19:17 - The phone. Woller tells the jury to watch the timing. Searches about fatal head shots and widows benefits before she vanished, then acid, bones, and how fast police can get a warrant after.
21:43 to 23:23 - The defense flips the case on its head. Crystal, they say, shot herself while handling Rasch's 9mm in the car, and a panicked man made a string of terrible decisions that only made him look guilty.
27:37 to 31:18 - Watch everything the defense concedes: the burning, the acid, the false Facebook messages, the bank card, all of it. They fight one question only, whether Rasch caused her death and meant to, and they remind the jury the prosecutor admitted no one knows how she died.
