NO BREAKS EDITION: Missing Wife Burn Pit Trial — WI v. Zachariah Rasch — Day 5
This whole case turns on how Crystal Rasch died. Today the witness who studied her remains got closer to that answer than anyone has.
We are deep into the state's case now, and Day 5 is where the prosecution went straight at the hole in the middle of it. Crystal's body was burned down to a few bone fragments and a tooth. No cause of death. No weapon. No eyewitness. No confession. That gap is the whole trial. Today the state called the man who studied what was left of those bones, and for the first time someone in that courtroom connected Crystal's remains to how she may have died. Then they brought the lead detective back and played the defendant's recorded interview, so the jury could finally hear Zachariah Rasch answer for himself.
The forensic anthropologist told the jury the skull fractures are consistent with a gunshot wound, and that no one survives an injury like that. It is the closest this case has come to a cause of death. Then the defense stood up and drew the line that may decide this trial. He reads bones. He is not a pathologist. Cause and manner of death were never his call, and they were not his job here. The jury also heard the analyst who mapped where Crystal's and Zachariah's phones traveled in the days she disappeared, and then the defendant's own answers in the interview room. Watch how the pieces lock together, and watch how hard the defense works to pry them apart.
WITNESS & HEARING GUIDE
5:45 — Matthew Anderson, the analyst who put the phones on the map — Cell tower and Google location data tracing where Crystal's and Zachariah's phones moved in the days she vanished, including his phone up near the Wisconsin Dells.
2:00:07 — Anderson cross-examination — The defense presses on how loosely this kind of data actually pins anyone to a spot, and what a single ping really does and does not prove.
2:07:05 — Jordan Karsten, the forensic anthropologist who read the remains — He identifies the burned fragments as human, points to fractures that happened around the time of death, and tells the jury the skull damage is consistent with a gunshot wound. The closest anyone has come to how Crystal died.
3:44:05 — Karsten cross-examination — The line that may define the trial. He reads bones, not bodies. Cause and manner of death belong to a pathologist, and that was never his role in this case.
3:48:33 — Det. Justin Cotney, the lead detective — The recorded interview picks back up, and the jury hears Zachariah Rasch answer for himself, pressed on the car that disappeared and on whether he has any connection to the area his phone kept showing up in.
