This is the trial of Zachariah Rasch, the Dodge County man accused of killing his estranged wife, Crystal Rasch, and then trying to erase her. The state says that after Crystal filed for divorce and built a life away from him, Zachariah killed her in June 2024, burned her body in a pit, and used chemicals to destroy what was left. He is charged with first-degree intentional homicide with a domestic abuse enhancer, and with hiding a corpse. If the jury convicts on the homicide count, the sentence is mandatory life in prison. Wisconsin has no death penalty.

Here is what makes this trial worth watching. Crystal's body was burned down to a few bones and a tooth. There is no determined cause of death, no weapon, no eyewitness, and no confession. The state has a mountain of circumstantial evidence, the blood, the purchases, the internet searches, but it has to prove an intentional killing beyond a reasonable doubt without the one thing that usually tells a jury how someone died. That gap is the whole case.

Crystal was 37 years old. She had filed for divorce and was building a life on her own terms. The state's theory is that she paid for that with her life. The defense's job is to test every link in the chain the state is offering, because in this country the burden never shifts. The state has to prove it. The accused has to prove nothing.
