LIVE: Millionaire Boat Crash Trial - FL v. George Pino - Day 6
On Labor Day weekend 2022, a 29-foot boat carrying fourteen people slammed into a concrete channel marker in Biscayne Bay. Seventeen-year-old Lucy Fernandez did not survive. Her classmate Katy Puig suffered a brain injury that doctors said gave her a five percent chance to live.
The man at the wheel was George Pino, a prominent Miami real estate broker, out on the water for his own daughter's birthday. For nearly a year, he faced only misdemeanors. The state agency that investigated never tested him for alcohol the night a teenager was dying, ruled out alcohol without ever testing for it, and closed the case, until a newspaper investigation forced it back open. Now Pino is on trial for vessel homicide and manslaughter, facing up to thirty years.
His attorneys say it was a tragic accident, not a crime. They point to a hospital test hours later that showed no alcohol, and to a wake from another boat that Pino says threw him off course. The state says he operated that boat recklessly, and that the proof was lost the night its own investigators chose not to look.
He is presumed innocent, and the state has to prove every charge beyond a reasonable doubt. We are not here to convict him or to clear him. We are here to watch whether the system can do its job in a case it already failed once. A seventeen-year-old is gone, another young woman is still fighting to walk and speak, and a new state law now carries Lucy's name. Six jurors will decide where a terrible accident ends and a crime begins.
