Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won the 2021 championship under controversial circumstances in Abu Dhabi. Some feel that Verstappen’s achievements from 2021 have lost some of their shine because of this. Max has responded to this among other things while speaking to De Telegraaf

Verstappen Responds To His Championship Being Undermined By “The Losing Side”

Max began by giving his thoughts on whether the rivalry between Red Bull and Mercedes went too far last year

“I think everyone was so eager to win the title that they pulled out all the stops. It was so terribly close. Normally one team has the upper hand a little more. Then it doesn’t have to be so hard and heated”

He was then asked if he has been in touch with Lewis Hamilton

“No, there was no reason to. We haven’t seen each other yet. That’s fine, we’re both drivers. We are looking forward and we are going back to it”

He then gave his opinion on having two race directors alternating between races

“I have nothing against the new race directors, but they will alternate. Then I think you will get even more differences in the assessment”

“I think it’s better to have one person as race director, with a little more help”

He was then indirectly asked if Mercedes are trying to undermine his championship win. He responded by stating

“That could be. But if they know me well, they know I don’t care. It was a crazy and epic Formula 1 season at the end of the ride”

“The losing team will try to take the shine off it a bit. But on the winning side it still feels good, I can assure you”

He summed up his words by explaining why he deserved to win the championship

“A championship is won over a whole season. Not by one decision in the last race. I also think I deserved the title, absolutely”

Nikita Mazepin is “very disappointed to hear that [his] F1 contract has been terminated” [Instagram]

“While I understand the difficulties, the ruling from the FIA plus my ongoing willingness to accept the conditions proposed in order to continue were completely ignored and no process was involved in this unilateral step”

As per a report by the BBC, the three drivers reportedly in the running to replace Mazepin are Pietro Fittipaldi, Oscar Piastri, and Jehan Daruvala

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc pointed out that “the last two years have been complicated for the team” [Canal Sports Club]

“For Ferrari, there are still high expectations. There is always an expectation to see Ferrari fight for the top positions”

“After the last two years, it is difficult. But I think we have responded very well”

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff feels that “for Nikita himself it is difficult. He’s a guy that managed to be in Formula 1. He can drive” [Bloomberg]

“I think as an athlete himself, it’s difficult, but I think in a way to support the robust sanctions that have been implemented, you understand why it could go either direction”

“We have Ukrainians, and we have Russians on the team, and it’s certainly not easy for all the individuals that have families there also”

Lando Norris is looking “forward to the high-speed circuits which we’ll be going to” [F1]

“That’s obviously the type of corners where you tend not to be able to follow so much over the last few years”

“You should be able to follow much closer on those types of tracks [this year] and it should prove to be good racing and exciting for everyone to watch”

Williams CEO Jost Capito is of the opinion that “it was very difficult for Claire [Williams] to take a step back, even though she knows it’s the right decision” [F1i]

“I think she needs some distance. We are on good terms and I want to give her the freedom she needs”
