Thailand Flag and History

This video shows the current flag of Thailand and the older version of the flag. The music is the Thailand National Anthem and the Royal Anthem.

The original flag of Thailand was simply red. This was in use from the 17th century. Other states in nearby displayed similar flags and it was decided to add a symbol to help the flag stand out. In 1782 a white chakra symbol was added. This was the symbol of the ruling Chakri dynasty. Later the White elephant was added to the center. The white elephant is a symbol of good fortune associated with the nation. It is also rare.

Thailand was one of the few Asian countries avoid coming under the rule of European imperialism. Despite this, they developed a relationship and became allies with Britain, France, Russia, and the United States. In honor of the relationship, King Rama VI changed the national flag to two horizontal white stripes with a red background, and later the central red stripe was changed to blue.

Red represents the blood Thai people have shed for their country. White is for religious laws and the purity of Buddhism. Blue stands for the institution of royalty that guides the nation.
